All About

Amy

For over two decades, I’ve been helping people unearth what they most need to express in words. I’ve supported writers from every walk of life—from incarcerated teens and unhoused adults to social justice attorneys, trans rights activists, and award-winning actors. I believe anyone who is called to write can come home to themselves on the page.

Writing One True Thing began organically. Someone asked me to offer something, and I grew it—slowly, by word of mouth—to meet the need and longing of those who showed up. My background includes graduate study in writing, publishing my own words, leading writing workshops in marginalized communities, and working with over 1,000 of our greatest living authors on their book tours. I also spent years mobilizing grassroots groups, donors, and private sector leaders to launch projects that make a difference. I also spent years mobilizing grassroots groups, donors, and private sector leaders to launch projects that make a difference.

Now, I bring all of that together to create spaces where people can write, connect, and discover the truths that matter most. When we come together to write, something sparks — and we leave more connected to ourselves, each other, and what we most long to say.

My Offerings Include

I. Hosting Group Sessions

We come together to carve our worlds into meaning with words — and to witness and be witnessed in that process.

a. Writing Jams
Writing Jams are online gatherings where we play with words on the page. Together, we complete a series of guided free-writing exercises designed to bypass the inner critic and spark discovery. Everyone is welcome (but never required) to share what they write

b. Writing Salons
Writing Salons are curated groups that meet for several two-hour sessions. In the Salon, we deepen our practice through free-writing exercises, share works-in-progress for thoughtful feedback, and explore short, interactive craft lessons. Before joining a Salon, you must attend a Writing Jam and be familiar with the Guidelines for Participation.

  c. Writing Retreats
These intimate, immersive retreats offer the rare gift of stepping out of daily life to focus on your writing. Over three days, we gather in a beautiful setting to write together, share our words, explore craft, and restore our creative selves. Retreats include guided writing sessions, experiential craft lessons, optional sharing circles, and plenty of space to wander, rest, and reflect.

  d. Workshops on the Heroine's Journey
The Heroine’s Journey is not a woman’s version of the Hero’s Path, but its own distinct journey, with a different compass and map. Unlike the fear-driven Hero, who faces the villain alone, the Heroine honors herself by shedding conformity and forging authentic bonds — first with herself, then with others. These workshops explore this timeless story structure and the wisdom it offers for transformation, connection, and courage.

e. Teen-Focused Sessions

Teen Writing Jams, Salons, and in-person retreats that provide young writers space to explore their voices, take creative risks, and share what matters most. Sessions include guided prompts, free writing, and opportunities to share in a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Participants are witnessed and celebrated as they discover the stories only they can tell.

II. Story Doula Work

I work one-on-one with writers at any stage of their creative process, from the first spark of an idea to a fully realized story. My role is to be a companion and guide — holding space for your story to emerge, helping you navigate the fears and obstacles that come with creation, and offering insight and encouragement along the way.

Working with me as a Story Doula is a collaborative experience. I read with care, listen closely, and engage with your story as it unfolds, helping you uncover the threads that matter most and shape them into work that feels alive and true. I work across all genres and welcome writers of any experience level — what matters is your commitment to your story and your willingness to face the challenges that come with bringing it into the world. Together, we create a space where your words can grow, your voice can deepen, and your story can take shape.
